NPRPF Adoption Guidelines
We ONLY adopt out in the local Houston area.

Important - Please read carefully.

The links to our adoption applications are at the bottom of this page:

The following is description of how our adoption process works. This should answer all of your questions.

1. You Submit a Pre-Adoption Application.

2. Our Adoption Committee reviews your application and contacts you for the initial phone interview.

3. A home visit* is required to see where our feathered friend will possibly live. We work hard to match the feathered friend to your family. This is very important!! Steps 1-3 must be done prior to you meeting any of our feathered friends.

4.  We require a minimum of three visits before any adoption is allowed to take place.

5.  If we deem that your home is a good forever home for feathered friend then we will consider this as a possible adoption.

6. The Rescue Committee comes together and determines if you and your family are the perfect home for our feathered friend.

7. We do require an adoption fee on all birds. There are no set amount of adoption fees as they are set case by case. All bird's adoption fees are set without cages.  From time to time we do have used cages available for sale at a very reasonable price.  All birds undergo a strict 30-day quarantine at the quarantine facility; an exam, a CBC, a gram stain and we test every bird for Pacheo's and Psittacosis. Although it is case by case there are times we deem to run more testing on a feathered friend to ensure it’s good health.

* If your application or home visit is not approved, the adoption committee will not continue with the adoption process.

Please complete the entire application. The more information your give us, the better. If your application is not complete, we cannot process it. You must meet the following criteria before you are able to adopt a feathered friend.

~ Be 21 years of age or older.

~ Be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide medical treatment and proper care for a feathered friend.

~ Reside in the local Houston, Texas area.

~ Must not smoke in the home.

~ Must not use Teflon in the home.

~ Be willing to continue your avian education so that you and your family truly do understand about proper avian care, nutrition, and environmental enrichment.

We are a volunteer organization and handle most of our rescue business in the evenings. Please be patient as we process your application.

Please NOTE the following:

~ A submitted application does not guarantee adoption of a feathered friend from National Parrot Rescue, nor does the application guarantee that the feathered friend an applicant would LIKE to adopt from us is the one that is best suited to meet their wishes. NPRPF reserves the right to recommend another feathered friend that they feel is best suited to match the application.

~ Adoptive families must agree to: periodic follow-up calls and visits during their first year of ownership, providing medical treatment when necessary

~ National Parrot Rescue is committed to our feathered friends, and REQUIRES that they be returned to NPRPF in the event that they cannot - at any time - remain in their new home.

Adoption fees are non refundable as they basically cover the cost of the birds medical workups and care while in the care of NPRPF.

Submission of your application confirms that you have read and understood the adoption procedures and notes, and indicates your agreement to abide by National Parrot Rescue and Preservation Foundation guidelines.
